The Foreign Languages College (FLC) of Zhejiang Normal University was founded as English Department in 1960 and upgraded to Foreign Language College in 1996. We were one of the first three colleges established in our university. Now we are the full member of the Global Alliance of Foreign Languages Universities and the Director Member of the the Belt and Road Languages and Cultures Network. We have the first-level Doctorate program, postdoctoral research program, first-level master program of foreign languages and literature, and two professional master programs of Subject Teaching (English) and translation (English and Japanese), and four undergraduate programs including English, Japanese, French and Translation as well as the college English Departments. At present we have 140 faculty and staff, and more than 1600 students covering undergraduate, master and doctor programs. We have also achieved the undergraduate-master-doctor upgrading Mode of Integrated Education.
Our College have been rated level B in the fifth-round disciplinary assessment launched by the Ministry of Education and we have been selected as the first-class provencial discipline in Zhejiang Province (Class A). English, Japanese and Translation have been selected as the first-class undergraduate programs in national discipline construction. and the entry scores of each discipline majors have successively ranked the first position in the provincial universities of Zhejiang Province. We have had 2 national first-class undergraduate courses and more than 40 provincial and ministerial courses. The achievements of foreign language education practice and research related to RICH have won the second-grade prize of National Teaching Achievements in 2022 and the top-grade provincial prize of Teaching Achievements in Zhejiang province in 2021.
We have had fruitful achievements in talents nurturing, with about 98% passing rate in the national teachers’ qualification examinations for the university students. In recent years, the passing rate of the TEM-8 Test for English Majors is 50 percentage higher than the average passing rate of the normal colleges in China. Our students hold the first prize successively for 9 sessions in the National Teaching Skills Competitions for Normal university Students (the only one in our country), hold the first prize successively for 5 sessions in the National Teaching Skills Competition for Subject Teaching (English), and hold the the first prize successively for 4 sessions in the National Teachers Union Style Exhibition. In addition, Our students have won more than 400 provincial-level honors such as the Top prize of the Guo-Cai Cup in the National English Speech Contest launched by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press ( FLTRP) and the first prize of HAN Su-yin International Translation Contest.
Our College has established partnership with the Riverside Branch School and the Irvine Branch School of California University in the United States, York University in Canada, Grenoble-Alpes University in France, and Kwansei Gakuin University, Utsunomiya University and Wakayama University in Japan and so on by signing cooperation agreements of outgoing exchange and joint training programs to offer opprtunities for the excellent students. The teachers in our College have actively undertaken a number of China-aid education programs offered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Commerce, which have fully promoted our competence in international social service.
Our College owns good educational conditions and advanced teaching facilities, including the 24,000m2 teaching buildings, advanced language laboratories, the first-class translation laboratories, the simultaneous interpreting laboratories, the autonomic foreign language learning and teaching centers, the pre-job training centers for foreign language teachers, eye tracker laboratories and academic halls etc. All these facilities can provide good service for the teachers and students in their learning, teaching and researching activities.
The Foreign Languages College of Zhejiang Normal University will undertake the fundamental task of virtue-promoting and talents-nurturing, observe the college motto of 'sincerity-advocating and virtue-venerating', and uphold the philosophical idea of culture construction including “to strive for progressiveness, to pursue for the super-excellence, to seek wholeheartedly for the academic study, and to contribute for the attentive family', and we will make our efforts to build an ideal surroundings for learning and teaching by observing the concept of “active for the loyal mission, confident for the upgrade construction, self-examining for the existing gap, and self-reliance for the futher improvement”. We will stride forward to reach the goal of building a high-level teaching and research college well-known in China with distinctive characteristics.
